I just realized that this might have been a mistake on my part.... but I cut up, split, and stacked some wood (a lot) from trees that are dead on my property.

I am talking about large (not sure what kind but they are not pine..) - about 2ft diameter, that have been laying on the ground for who knows how long... They have moss on them but when your cut them - about 2 inch in they are fresh..

Anyhow... Should I not use this? (obviously only after I split and stack them for a while)

Don't see why not. So long as the wood is solid and not rotted it will burn fine. Rotted wood will burn but give far less heat. Only other reason not to use it would be if it absorbed any chemicals like salt, oil, preservative etc. if it has bugs in it you want to keep them out of the house, so don't store the wood in the house, bring it in and throw it in the bug crematorium.

I agree with BI. Have done this for too many years to count. As long as the wood is not rotten, you're good to go. The problem arises if you cut up the wood and don't get to it for a few years. It rots and all that work is wasted AND you have to get rid of the rotten wood. Birch will rot the fastest if you don't cut it and split it within a year or so. I have aslo found deadwood (hardwood) in the woods that has no bark. This makes great firewood.

As stated above, all good if it aint punky / rotted.

If you have standing dead, get after it!
