I'm looking at an older log cabin to buy and have moved. It has some rotted logs, more toward the bottom, I have no experience doing this. My plan was to move it and put it on blocks while a cinder block foundation is put in, should I replace the logs while on blocks or when on the foundation? Any advice or direction with this project would be great, I've done woodwork and cabinetmaking my whole life and have the tools needed but I just havn't worked with logs. I don't have any pictures yet and am still crunching numbers to see if I can swing it. Thanks in advance for any help..

Were you going to disassemble it to transport it? If so you could take the sill logs out and use them as templates to make new ones.

And log homes are easier to take down and reassemble. Mark the logs, then reinstall it in reverse order. A new roof will probably be in order, but you'd want that anyway. The basic shell/walls and ling bldg insp said, use old logs as templates, and take extra steps to prevent new logs from rotting, ie bigger overhang to keep water of the sides etc. Sounds like a fun project.

I'm going to have it moved in one piece.I realize my question is vague, but I don't have a lot of details yet, I just got the owner to decide to sell. I've been driving past it for the last 12 years wishing I could buy it to move to my hunting land. He wants me to make an offer, I'm going up this weekend to get a better look and some pics and measurements. I'm told its an old DNR cabin, its got a thin strip maple floor, kind of like a bowling alley. It has a lot of neat features, I;m so looking forward to this.....

Cool Don! I'm into old cabins. Ours was built in 1871 but I could not find any forums about original cabins anywhere. There is a Facebook page but that wasn't much help. Here is a decent source. http://www.appalachianwoods.com/antique_log_cabins.htm

I suggest you get a realistic view of what it's going to cost you to move, locate, and repair this old building before you offer him any money at all. You are doing him a big favor by getting rid of it, perhaps, since an unmaintained building is a liability both on terms of people possibly getting hurt in it, but also in terms of the cost of demolishing it. Maybe it's in better shape than I imagine but old buildings can take a LOT of repair
