I just got an email from Straight Talk, Wal-mart's prepaid cell service, advertising this product:

I'm kinda interested. $130 for the device itself and $10 a month for coverage. I dug around a little on Straight Talk's website and see that it uses Verizon's CDMA cell phone service, which is good for me, since my place is in a GMS dead zone. Biggest problem I saw is that it uses AC power, but it does have a 9 volt backup, which Straight Talk claims will last a week. If it'll last a week on a 9 volt battery, I'm wondering how long it would last plugged into a cheap 80 watt inverter and 12 volt battery.

What do you think? Anyone have one of these yet?

The URL doesn't work- please update.

Does your inverter put out 9 volts?

Doing an onsite search (on straighttalk) for home alert system finds the product. Never used one, sounds cool, but all it would do for us is let us know someone broke in. We and the Police are too far away to get to our place in a timely manner.

Having a solar power system that can be left on would be the ideal power solution. That's what we do as we have a small drip watering system we leave running to keep some new plants going while we are absent.
