Thanks to anyone who is reading this! So I'm just getting prepared and honing in on my final design for a 12 by 16 lofted cabin. The basics... I'll be framing with 2 by 4's 16" o.c. I'll have a metal roof with a simple rain collection system for showers, etc. I'm thinking either t1-11 or board and batten for the siding. The foundation will be 6 concrete piers. It will be generator powered. I have a generator, and Im doing every part of it myself. There will be no septic system. I already have the Woodstove, oven, water pump, transformer, fridge...given these specs how much do you think I should plan on spending roughly? Any input is good! I'm building up in ny. Thanks, josh

To shell it should run you about 2500-3000 with your floor, roof and siding....... insulation, interior finishes etc etc....will add to that..

+1, I just did some numbers a few days ago for a structure 8x20 with a loft and it was about $3000 for the shell. I can probably shave that down by shopping around for the materials. The T-11 siding, windows, and door make up about 40% of that number... So I should be able to reduce it a lot by shopping for used windows and doors.

I suggest you do what I have been doing for the last few years, and work up a detailed design, then carefully count every stick of lumber, connector, pier, beam, etc. this will force you to finalize the design, and will show you how the costs just keep adding up.... Oh yeah! I need that, and that, and that. I can get that on Craig's List, but not that, etc. etc. Then keep a running total of costs including tax and delivery as applicable. But I'm a detail oriented, list making kind of person, maybe you don't want to bother.

I've got close to $8,000 into my 12x16. That also includes my outhouse and shed. Here are some pics from an older post. It's fully insulated now. I probably have another $1,000 to go with paneling and chimney materials for the woodstove.

Hope this helps

Tcmatt,
Very nice...exactly what I'm looking to do. Did you get your plans online, or just design them yourself? I'm looking for something I can submit to the county for approval. Thanks!

Josh,
No plans. I just did it myself. I've got some sketches I did on graph paper. I'm happy to share those. Just let me know.

Figure about $40 per square foot for finished inside. Less for just the shell.

I have just under $10,000 in my 12 x 24. That includes $2400 for labor to frame it. I have done everything else. I am figuring just under $12,000 finished. Going to drive to Colorado to get beetle killed pine for the ceiling and trim. I think the $40 per square foot finished is pretty close. I am figuring about $41 but extras like the pine cost more than sheetrock for the ceilings. All depends on your taste and if you can find things cheaper than the big box stores.
