Number one on my list,,, The Internet. If all I had to go by was what we had 20 years ago, none of this would have been possible. Looking in the local news paper classified adds, radio, adds in magazines, inventing and building your own stuff, we really had very limited resources. Now you can research and buy anything imaginable.
Number two on my list,,, Cell Phone. My only verbal communication with the world. I also have to be able to be contacted by work 24/7.
Being off grid but still having all the comforts of home has been a wonderful experience for me. I still watch T.V. play the stereo, run the fan, have lights, have running water, wood heat and cooking, gas heat, cooking, hot water, refrigeration. Computer, toaster microwave, crock pot, battery charger, vacuum cleaner, washer/dryer, power tools, battery tools. (oh yes, can't forget Michelles hair dryer!,,,lol)

The Internet provides so much information. We found our property online, learned what type of buildings we want, and ways to use and prepare our property.
We dropped our land line a while back , except for DSL here at the house.

My mom and dad made it possible for me....I paid for the land and all the building materials, but my dad was right there with me building and problem solving...my mom was there cheering is on! I also lived at home while I did all this and they knew that was a good idea because I was building something they would be using too!
I literally watched a ton of "this old house" and learned a lot by going to home shows and asking questions....It also taught me that I do not want to build my own house again....maybe another cabin though...
