Ray, I remember those days. I loved "radio" and lived through that craze in the 70's. Skip was signal bouncing off the ionosphere, as it was charged by the sunspots. Cycle peaked about every 11 yrs and would render the CB worthless during the days as it was working towards the peak. We are at peak in 2013 right now. How do I know?
I am a HAM radio operator. Got my feet wet back in the 70's with CB's. I'm an extra class operator (FCC's highest level) with 6 bands of radio in my truck (12, 11, 10, 6, 2 and .7 meter bands. I have 160, 80, 75, 60, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10, 6 and 2 meter on my base. Long distance is usually doen on 10-160 meters.
I have a 2 meter in every other mobile rig I drive too.
Where my cabin is, we have a 2 meter repeater (VHF FM) on the mountain right behind me. Allows me to use my walkie talking and talk well over 50+ miles in any direction.
Its a blast. Anyone interested in becoming a HAM, I can steer ya right to it.
3 levels, Technician, General and Amateur extra. General and A/E is needed to talk worldwide. But Technician class gets you everything from 50 Mhz and up to use. This is operfecrt for more localized communication and the cvountry is full of mountain top repeaters, free to use.
If you are a prepper or off gridder, this is a nice addition.
I know we have quite a few other members in here that are HAMs.
