I just returned from a weekend camping trip to the White Mountains. While there I decided to go check out a piece of land that I had previously owned in Bethlehem NH back in the 1980's. My dream then was to build a cabin as a weekend retreat with the idea of permanently residing there as soon as I could. Life sometimes has a way of redirecting our priorities and that's what happened to me. My first wife was pregnant with my son and we decided it would be a better idea to sell the land to build a house near where we lived and worked in southern NH which we did. Well, before I sold it I had begun to clear that lot and had glimpses of what the view would be with some prudent thinning. I could see the west slope of MT Washington through the trees but that's as far as I got. Well I just had to see what the new owners did with the lot and what I saw made me heart sick! It was one of the most beautiful views that you could possibly have in the White Mountains including the entire Presidential range and much of the Pemigewasset Wilderness! Those of you who are familiar with that area will know what I'm talking about. I had that in my grasp and let it go for something I later lost anyway. I paid $9300 for those 2 acres back then. There are currently lots adjacent for sale at $55,000 plus. I'm not sure why I posted this. I guess I just had to vent. Don't let your dream escape like I did.

flyrdr i hear ya ! every property we have had in the past-we let go and years later we get a bug in us to go on a country drive to see old properties. we had 5 heavily wooded acres in Molalla, oregon.Across the road was hundreds of a wood companies land.so it was like we were really nestled in the deep dark woods.so pretty.well we sold the place.went back many years later.the people had cleared off all the land and slapped a mobile home on it.it lookd like a lot in town no less. agh.we sure know this feeling.it s like we let go of places and did not do all we had dreamed of-but i tell u-it just makes your heart sick when u see what others did do.agh. now i am so happy...we have our land that is perfect for us and we have been putting our dreams into being.its wonderful.it took us many many years to finally get another piece of land and go for it.its very wonderful.the best part of this is-the kids are now grown and we dont have to worry about them while out there building n working.

Everything happens for a reason.
Had I bought and built in Texas, Maine, Washington (the state), Arizona, Florida, Alabama, California, or any of the other places I've lived, I may never have found my true "heaven" here in Kansas.
Don't let the tears (from crying over spilt milk) cloud your vision of what is in your future.

Thanks everyone
Martian, I believe you are absolutely right. I try to live by the addage "when you have one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow you're p*****g all over tday. I sometimes forget that. Things will work out the way they are supposed to. Cabingal, the one silver lining is the new owners did a beautiful job building a nice cabin that fits the lot perfectly. It's tucked in with a buffer of tres between it and the road. Not so for the owners of the adjacent lot. They built right on the road and let the view grow in. It's kind of an eyesore.

We can't live in the past, but we should learn from it to improve our future.
We had a few opportunities to get land...we missed out. We almost got a few that were duds...we lucked out.
I watched my dad get and hold land. Working non stop to pay for it and never really use it. So there has to be a balance.
Raw land (non farm) and lots are price high right now because people bought too high. Start low balling and you'll see how many people are desparate to get rid of their responsibilities.
Press on. Focus on the dream...knowing it cannot be found in the past.

Quoting: Anonymous Cabingal, the one silver lining is the new owners did a beautiful job building a nice cabin that fits the lot perfectly then this is gratifying for sure. i am glad u could see this silver lining.when i go to a place such as a lot we may have wanted but figured we should not cause it looked like a problem..next time we go see it,someone has built a fancy place on it by their own hands.i guess if u have enough monies u can do about anything.
