YAY, FINALLY I will get to go to the cabin this weekend!!!! It has been way too long! I don't care what we do I just can't wait to get back to the place I love!

I never would have thought summer would be the time of year when I get to the cabin the least, but that is the way it seems to be working out. Oh well...just glad I don't have to wait any longer!

Congrat on the travels to the cabin. We have been trying to make it up there as much as possible this yr. Had a small issue (not) last weekend and will not be able to go up this weekend. Just hate it when the power supply that runs everything starts on fire and then starts the shed on fire as well. hopefully Honda will get right on this and make some sort of a determination so we can get a new genny soon and back to the cabin. Enjoy your time and have FUN!!!!

Whaaaaat????? What in the world happened???? Bummer! What Honda generator do you have and how old is it? I hope Honda will stand behind their product. We really like ours.

I do plan on enjoying my time at our cabin. The weather is suppose to be beautiful with much cooler temps and that is very welcome! I feel like it has been so long that I barely remember what it looks like!

Yeah, you should tell us more.

I went to the cabin to mow yesterday. Hot, deer flies, I din't feel like staying. My dream whould be to have a liveaboard boat in the harbor for thse hotter days and then the cabin for all other times. I don't need the home in the burbs.

I purchased the generator about six months (late Feb.) ago. It is a Honda EM5000SX. We are not really sure how it started we were eating breakfast and needed something out of the truck. Our kid went out to get it and noticed smoke coming from behind and from inside the shed. I ran outside in time to see flames. The fire went through the back wall of the shed as well. Needless to say if Eric would not have gone outside exactly when he did the shed would have been gone and possibly a lot of acres. The cabin is in the middle of a Jack Pine forest. Our water is a 220 volt pump so we only had about ten minutes of water pressure without the genny. That is what made me very nervous. I was told that before I even got to the genny that there were a few surges as well and it blew some lights and a couple of plugs which is weird to me because there are circuits on the genny and I have it routed through a panel in the cabin. Everything should have been protected x2.

We had ran the genny for about 3-4 hrs the night before and filled it up prior to running it that night. Then in the morning we started it up for breakfast about an hour and half into it running is when all this happened. A lot of the plastic and rubber are melted and will need to be replaced for sure. All in all not sure if I would use it in the woods again.

I am not sure how well Honda will do with standing behind their product as of yet. I took it back to the dealer on Monday and they don't seem to be very speedy. I do know they finally called Honda (three days later) but somewhat left me in the dark about when they will take care of it. I called the dealer on Saturday after the fire to report it so they could start the process on their end and did nothing until three days after I brought it in. Since it was a fire it will be a team from California looking into it. From what the dealership said they will try very hard not to make their fault or there would need to be a bigger investigation. I think I may get hosed on this one. I will keep you posted.

Heading to the cabin thursday night. Expecting cooler weather finally!!

We lost a pretty big shade tree over our dock so we are going to try and create something artificial until we can get another tree to shade it.

I'd also like to clean up the brush and firewood. It was scattered about the property during the build and we had a lot of limbs fall during those summer storms.

Should be good weather to work outside all day and relax by a fire at night!!

LOL Rob!!

I am heading up right after work to get a few things done if I can. We have had over 4 inches of rain here at home in the last 24 hours and it's not supposed to stop until tomorrow. Hopefully north will be a little dryer!!!

Well I just heard from Honda about the generator and the fire. Just as I thought they stated their equipment did not start the fire. The picture showed that the generator was too close to the shed by about six inches (not sure how they can determine six inches from a picture) and she also gave me two different distances when referring to their manual. She also said that it looks like the gas tank might have been filled too much by a stain that was found on the underside of the generator after the fire. I explained that there was gas leaking out during the fire and had to turn off the gas to get the fire out......

So it came down to what they wanted to determine to get themselves off the hook which is what I was told would happen when I took it to the dealer. No surprises and will not buy another Honda again and will NEVER buy from that dealer again (Linwood Cycle Sales in Linwood Michigan). I will worry every time that generator is started and is running what might happen again!!!!

Do a search online to see if others had the issue. If yes, then call them back and threaten a class action. They will likely replace it. They don't care about one or two people, but if it is a snowballing problem they will act fast.

BTW - we have 6 honda generators at work and there is nothing quieter or cleaner for power...at least that we have found.

After a lot of research I went with a Honda because of their reputation and how quiet they are. They are good as long as nothing goes wrong (just like any other product). It's when the company it's self will not honor their own warranty or workmanship of their product. To find fault of six inches from a picture is pretty ridiculous to get out of taking care of a customer. The bad part was I spoke with the dealership and told them that this was not the exact placement of the generator but wanted to put it where they could see fire damage to the shed as well. The investigators never called once during their investigation to clarify or ask any other questions. A lot of what they told me was wrong the dealership never forwarded the information and after the case was closed Honda would not review it again. There response to everything was you have insurance ..... call them!

Think it is time to get off the subject within this thread. So....

We are heading back to the cabin this weekend to get a few more things done before the big adult weekend coming up next weekend. Six couples will be up for shooting clays, canoeing, a few cocktails, four wheeling, swimming, etc.

Labor Day weekend will be kid's weekend and we should have about a dozen kids or so up for a three day weekend. This should be a blast for the next few weekends then it will be time to let the cabin sit and get ready for hunting season.

We are going up again this weekend too! We are planning a Labor Day weekend open house since a lot of friends and co-workers haven't seen the cabin in person. We also wanted to invite contractors like a This Old House wrap party -- we'll see.

We have some yard work and touch up painting to do. I'd also like to explore a little. We haven't vetured our much...

I can always going up north to friends cabins when I was a kid and we always went for a ride in the evening going down dirt roads and two tracks just seeing what is out there and to always look for animals (especially deer). We don't venture out like we did when were kids. Probably the price of gas and now there is a lot more to do right around the cabin its self. Miss those days!!

I will need to replace a few rubber items and everything should be fine.

The next few weekends should be a blast let's just hope the weather cooperates and all goes well. Everyone is pretty excited about going up next weekend.

File a complaint against American Honda with the BBB </subtopic>

I'm going to stay at the camp Saturday, friend of mine in the fancy neighborhood up the road is having his MBA graduation party and it's going to be a blowout - Figure it'll be easier to get a ride 3 miles than 30

Got back from my place on the 6th. I spent 15 days up north and planning on going back up the 31st fora 3 day stay over the holiday and again the following weekend for another 3 dayer (bear season and I have a permit finally)
The 15 days is the most I have been able to get up there at one time (plant shut down) I put down gravel last year and moved our camper (temporary vacation home) to the pad, moved the deck and leveled it all out. Moved the out house to the deck I built over a holding tank. Spent time with the cousins that came up for the weekend.
Now I'm ready to hit it hard at work for the next 10 months before lay off so I can start my build next summer.

Glad you are having a restful day Rob_O...the weather here is absolutely gorgeous- a bummer to not be at the cabin today.

tsvoy...lets hope Wi. continues to have incredible weather like today over the holiday!!

My almost 21 year old daughter came home today to gather up coolers and the generator- she is going up to our cabin tomorrow afternoon for a few days with a couple friends and maybe my 18 year old daughter if she can switch her work hours. Who would have thunk they would ever voluntarily want to venture up north by themselves just because they have free time!?!??? Pretty amazing!!! They use to hate going!

Finally getting to go. It's only 75 miles, but still has been hard to get there. My 37 year old son called and wants to come with daughters in September a couple times. It's a long haul for him, it makes me feel good. I havn't said anything about selling it yet. It won't be easy.

Have a great weekend Owen!

We have to wait till tomorrow to go now because my son was chosen to suit up with the varsity football team at their game tonight-he's a sophomore and most likely will not even get to play and the game is not at home and I had to run all over town to get him the socks they are required to wear as part of the uniform and then track him down to give them to him and will have to pick him up later tonight when they get back to town AND he still needed to be at the sophomore practice this morning at 8 and needed more $$ for walking and getting lunch with a couple other kids before they go back to be at the varsity practice to watch film...blah blah blah...he's much more committed than I am but shhhhhhhhh...our little secret.

Three days and since I forgot the battery for my drill, I won't have much to do but fish, hike, stack wood, and look at the moon. No I didn't forget it on purpose!

Heading up in a few hours. Our granddaughter has been asking to camp out every night this week and she has already stated her disapproval about only spending two nights at the Shabin
