Hey everyone, just wanted to say hello. Have been checking out this site and the forums for a while now. My husband and I recently moved to southern Vermont, and hope to build our own modest timber frame home. Right now we are scouting property, and gathering ideas.
Our plan is to build a smaller cabin (<500'sq.) to live in for 2 years or so while we work on our primary home, and then turn the small cabin into space for guests or as a vacation rental. Would love to hear from anyone who may have done this before.
Love reading everyone's stories and looking at your photos.

Welcome to the forum meliSsa. When we decided to move to our cabin full time, we built a small, 3 unit motel attached to it (we were only allowed one building on the property). We really enjoy meeting all the interesting people who come to visit.

Welcome. I'm a VT'er too. Southern VT all the way. I'm in Halifax.
It's a great part of the world. I start missing it the second I pull out of our driveway.
Good luck to you sand keep us posted. I'd be interested to hear more about the areas you're looking in.

sabiggs, we're currently living in Newfane, but are looking in the Guildford/Halifax area for land! We have some friends in Halifax who are building a home, and we fell in love with the area while visiting them.
I just found the thread about your cabin progress, and it's been very inspiring. Hopefully someday I'll have about a million questions for you. ;)

Greetings from CT / Island Pond VT. Our camp is 12x20. At the time it was very inexpensive to build. Look around for deals on used stuff on CL and ebay. "Restore: a habitat for humanity store also a great place to shop for used stuff.
