I was on one of the gulf islands a while ago, and my friend found a retro 70's style fireplace with a chimney.

It was great, smoke went up and away, didn't bother anyone.

Was wondering if anyone tried building one over a fire pit and how it worked.

Looking to get the benefit of 360, with also the chimney to channel smoke away.

There is a warming hut on a snowmobile trail near my cabin, it is a closed in building (not insulated and has some holes in the siding). But it has an open firepit inside with a chimney similar to the middle picture....I've only been there a couple times but it seems to work pretty good...

Its really nice sitting by the fire on a cold day on the trails....I was thinking about doing something like the third pic in a pavilion at my house, let us know if you go ahead with the project!

Those are nice.

No, never have. I did build a vent over my gas grill out of an old sink bowl and flex exhaust pipe, but that don't count. ;)
