Happy 2025! Any special cabin plans this year? My place is doing fine, even the chipped asphalt I spread on the steep driveway is hanging in there well, a few minor rain grooves put still very passable even in the cart in 2wd, one of the few things I need to repair. That, and the log splitter engine puked. But the structures themselves are all fine.
How about you, any to dos?

If I can manage to retire this spring I'll spend a lot more time at the cabin this year...

Finishing up details like the front porch, cladding the toolshed and mounting the final solar array. Then cleaning up the property overall followed by the house & prepping for sale by fall. This unfortunately will be my last winter here.
Further highlighted today, as I have about 6 hours of snow blowing todo and the damned machine decided to break of course (just the pull cord, fixed & ready to remount) but it's just getting too much to manage.

More site cleanup mainly. That was my primary accomplishment last year. I have so much deadfall around from the site just being “unmanaged northwoods” until we bought it. It wasn’t logged in at least the last 100 years and hasn’t burned in a LONG time… I have about 30’ around the cabin totally cleared but in the 100’-150’ between the cabin and the lake there’s still quite a bit of deadfall between the big trees. I cleaned up 3/4 of it last year but still lots to go.
Also some landscaping and building earthen steps.

I had plans, seems like they got changed on me....now I'll do whatever I can as I can and maybe enjoy the place more than the work. That is going to take a paradigm shift for me.

I'm going to watch the trees grow and fell one 70 foot pine that died this past summer.
There's some wire fencing that I should restring with new wire.

I try to do that too but so far it’s not happening. Can’t do nearly what I used to but just cant keep still all day. First it’s the arrival things: is there enough water, battery, Lp for the water heater and grill, gas for the generator, firewood?
Then on to less important: sweep the floors, blow off the decks, clean the kitchen and bathroom areas, wood stove…
Even with a pretty much ready to live cabin there’s always something to do.

This! I think we have accomplished pretty much all the projects we have wanted to do.... almost. Always a few dead trees to remove each year. We do need to re-coat the logs this year which shouldn't be too bad of a job.there are a few areas that need sanded and restained but for the most part just spraying and brushing out the Cascade clear coat.
Back and forth from Colorado to Arizona this year bringing unnecessary "stuff" back here. This may be our last summer/winter up there. Considering selling spring of 2026. We will slide into our 70's next year. Kids, and we, want us to be closer to them in Oregon. Age and the often accompanying arthritis has taken a toll on my wife. She has been working with Dr's to alleviate nerve pain in her lower back. The ablation has helped but there is still something not right. She is having a hard time walking and pain still running through her left hip causing a limp. Different Dr Tuesday to evaluate her to see if he can find the cause.
This is hard for her/us. We have hiked and backpacked on 5 continents. 10 to 15 mile days the norm with 15 to 20 mile days not unusual. We had to slow down the last couple of years because she would begin to hurt a couple miles in and if we went too far She would be down for days. Now she can't walk around a grocery store without needing to rest. Her goal is still to finish the Colorado Trail. We have hiked it from Denver to Carson Gulch just above Lake City. That leaves ~110 miles to go... through the San Juan mts. Keeping our fingers crossed that the doc's can get her back on her feet!

This year I can walk about 15-20 minutes and then need to sit. Then I can go again for a while and rest again. But it is not as fun and I have the concern that I might find myself "stuck" somewhere. Fortunately it does not hurt to sit so I can drive or fly places.
4 continents for me.
Fortunately I can do most other activities. Yesterday and today I have been doing a project. Laminate flooring, a bedroom about 12 x 12 at my son's. Almost done. I'm taking a break.
I sure hope the doctors hit the right solution for your wife.

Looks good! I like the laminate choice. We hired ours done... I had only done I other laminate floor and it was really straightforward. This intimidated me! In hindsight I probably could have done it. But.... having them remove the old tilecwas worth every penny!

BTW... We are of the "school" that counts "Australia/ Oceania" as a continent. We have been to the African Continent, in Egypt but did no more than walk around the Pyramid sites, no actual "hiking."

Oh yes, Australia is definitely a continent; I've just never been there.

Not sure what will happen in 25. Didn't make as much progress on the cabin this past year as I'd like. Finishing the drywall is taking FOREVER, and I keep having to re-do mistakes I find later. Also lost my job after nearly 19 years in November, so things are kind of on hold for the moment, and not sure what my time will look like in 2025.
With any luck, we'll finish finishing the drywall in 2025 and get the interior primed and painted, and start working on the final flooring and/or trim.
