We had Jan cold at end of Nov and 1st of Dec, kinda cut us shy on the close-up stuff. I do something each time we go (45min away) rather than one big marathon; ie, seems I don't remember everything..... We have had some mid 40*f days so took advantage to do the (hopefully) wrap up the last things. We do hold some hope for the occasional trek in so it isn't a total lock-down. I brought home the 100ah LFP and have the Ecoflow River-2 portable power to take in. Used to be Id take a (heavy) agm and leave it to winter over. It is nice to have some light duty electric! In past several weeks we rediscovered that our personal comfort limit still seems to be about 32* otherwise the dead cold inside takes too long to get warm; though coming in from a walk to even 60* during warm up sure feels good. Thus far we have only had light snow so we can still drive right in. The real cut-off for us will be the snowplow berm at the entry once snow comes and the aforementioned deep cold. Hard to believe we are less than 2wks from the winter solstice when the Days Will Start Getting Longer!

We've never really closed up, but I drain the pipes in mid October and put out bucket traps. This year for the first time we wrapped the furniture in plastic, it's a really bad mouse year. Last weekend I just temporarily uncovered the bed and one chair.
Usually I'll come up for the weekend a few times during the winter, usually without my wife who has less tolerance for the cold.
When the road is closed I hike, ski, or snowshoe in with weekend supplies in a backpack... or if the road is passable with no more snow in the forecast I can decide whether to risk getting a ticket for driving on the closed road (hasn't happened yet). I bring the heavy stuff (water, coal, propane for the stove and generator, enough for a few weekends) in before the road is closed.

Good to hear! Not the cold so much here as the darkness in a small cabin.

The local district ranger gave me a verbal thrashing last year when he happened to be going down the county road at the same time I drove up to the wrong side of the gate with the "closed between 1/1 and 4/15" sign. No ticket, no written warning either, but he did say he had an excellent memory. What are the odds he'll see me again?

Yeah, it's probably the kind of thing one can talk their way out of... once. So far I haven't had to.

On our town road the snow berm doesn't get far off the pavement and the ditch is pretty much right there, so no place to pull off to park without obstructing the road. Ive done it in the past long enough to shovel a non frozen berm out of the drive entry so I can barely park in. Waayyy difficult! I did prep my little JD 1025r with bucket and back blade hoping I can hike in, get it running and clear the drive or at least the entry; IF it will start.....
