Early on in the pandemic, we took the leap by buying a mid-19th century former grist mill. While we never expected the pandemic to last as long as it has, luckily it gave us a place of refuge. We have been working hard to convert the grist mill into a seasonal cabin, and renovate the near by cottage, and learning a lot along the way in terms of pond and dam management throughout each season. 255000_5.jpg

Oh, that is so neat, old grist mill, or old water driven sawmills are also cool stuff. Nice work preserving some of our American heritage and history.

Always nice to have more Ontarioian's in the forum. What a great project, do you have a water wheel? For some reason they have always fascinated me.

No water wheel, but a water turbine. The turbine is non-operational, but all of the original milling pieces, wheels, belts, conveyors were luckily saved and placed down in the cellar. Once we are done with renovations, we will more than likely put some of the wheels and belts in place and link them to a small electric motor they they can turn again.

My grandparents ran a mill in Appalachia. That structure is still in place with the current owners doing a good job at keeping it up. Seeing your pictures brought back memories! What a great project and thanks for sharing it!
