Seems a large part of my free time is spent on cabin stuff. Since ours is remote we always have a going to the cabin tote. Been going through snogos. I enjoy my family around me. So I keep a small fleet of songos n wheelers around for all. My beautiful wife let me buy the wood to redeck a trailer. Its a car hauler type. I'm redecking it to extend out over the wheels so I have a 8x18 when done. 2x6 TnG. Then I can comfortably get 4 machines on it. I need to finish pounding in our sand point well. But need to come up with an adapter to use a pile driver first. Ideas welcome. Need to order some spare atv snogo parts for at cabin. Carb n fuel pump rebuild kits. New part for reddy heater. Get 4 , guaranteed clean when I bought em at a garage sale gallon plastic gas jugs cleaned n ready to fill n freight. Would like to put some steel cable cross bracing on cabin pilings. We get earthquakes ! One last year, 7.4 tipped a couple trees. Its feel good insurance. First I gotta make up 18, 6' cables n weld up some all thread n washers for eye bolts. N but a bunch of turn buckles. Shouldn't need any lumber. I already have the pine TnG for the kitchen cabinets. I will build birch counter tops. And the lumber for a 8x12 wheeler shed is out there, in pieces. Need a bunch of pallets freighted out for flooring. Still need to get wood for ceiling upstairs figured out. Been thinking about buying a bandsaw sawmill n making my own. Lots of huge beetle kill spruce around. Just have to fall n skid n cut n stack n dry n finish cut it first. And buy , haul, set up a sawmill. First. Materials for a new outhouse has been requested. Guess a piece of plastic tied up over the crotch of a tree wasn't good enough. Its portable that way. Heck there's even a bucket with a toilet seat in the generator shed. There's never enough time for it all it seems. But sure fun trying. Especially when I think about all the enjoyment that this little cabin will bring my family. I think that might be my primary driver. Knowing that my family will always have a little slice of Alaska. To enjoy all the things that I am truly blessed to do. Guess maybe even all those jobs are really just blessings ! I can set back n feel like the most blessed man in the world. 302CA0141DCA48C38.jpeg

Yup sounds about right. During construction I spent an awful lot of time at home prepping for the next trip. When your remote and off grid if you don’t take what you need a project just gets delayed until the next trip
It can get overwhelming at times but I found if I just prioritize jobs and accept that it all takes time I kind of enjoy the entire process
And force yourself to take some down time to just enjoy what you have.

I brought some cabin project stuff home at snowed-out, some of it I even got done! Projects expand to fill available time? Then there is this site, it has alternately helped me stay focused and given me withdrawal symptoms......

This is so important! The last couple of years between firewising and building a greenhouse, shop/woodshed, burying the water line, designing/building solar systems, building paths.... on and on we did very little hiking, fishing and exploring... the reason we bought the cabin in the first place!!
Won't say I don't have more projects for this year, and while we are back at the primary home I am gathering materials, but.... we are determined this year to REALLY ENJOY THE CABIN instead of just working on and around it!

Yes, it can get overwhelming. Maybe because we know our time is usually very limited (I'm not retired yet...). And yes, it's also an enjoyable process. I do as much as possible at home on projects to expedite the process. That way I (try to) have more time to decompress while at the cabin. Below pics of my next "pre-cut-kit" underway. Open wood storage on one side, enclosed lockable power shed (solar/generator) and misc. storage on the other side. This is as far as it gets and will be dismantled and transported. All the metal roofing has been cut to size, as well as all the board and battens. Trim work will be onsite. Just waiting for the spring thaw for footings... 4' x 14' Overall

I hear you on the free time spent at home doing cabin things. This winter's project for me has been a 4x4 outhouse with 4x2ft porch. About 97% of it has been done after work via headlamp light with a 1yr old in a backpack on my back

I kind of have a hit and miss plan.
when the wife or other family comes, I get up early and get projects done by 12-1:00, because I work hard and fast and don't won't to hear bitching about "working" at cabin. they get the rest of the day.
If it's just me on a work trip- wake up at 6:30-7, make breakfast, work it 5-6, shower, cook/ drink/ play tunes till sleep.
hunting trips- up at 5, hunt till 11-ish, nap/ projects till 3, hut till dark

My at home time, I am always planning, prepping and collecting items for the next cabin run.
My idea of R&R is working over there. I'm winding down on the big infrastructure projects, the shelter, then maybe fencing on back 20, then I will be all done, just upkeep, adding decor, though the inside of the ranger station is starting to look more like a small museum with old artifacts from mining, logging, USFS and NP stuff.
