Hi I have been lurking on this forum for quite a while and have really enjoyed this place. I have learned so much here and I have finally taken the plunge. I have 20 acres of land and recentley purchased a 14x32 storage shed that I am converting into a cabin. I call it the "shabin" lol. Here are some exterior pics.... shabin_002.JPG

I have one very similar. 14x36 but it is a gabled roof, not gambrel. It has been very easy to convert!!! Good luck! and enjoy

Put my underground power line in. Installed the meter box and wheather head also. Just need the power company to put in my meter and turn me on now. Then i will have power to use my tools and get the inside finished.

I'm excited for you. I am currently talking to the Tuff Shed folks in Knoxville (2 hrs away) about a shed with loft. Still unsure about the size as I want a full bath and hopefully small utility room for stackable washer/dryer and hot water heater. Will have to build septic but water at the end of the lane (several hundred yards). I will have to do in stages as I want to pay as I go.

I saw the title of this thread and thought my husband started one. We also call our in-progress building a shabin.

I love your shabin. We have just purchased 3 acres in Georgia and have been looking at sheds to make into homes. Please post pictures of your interior as you are working on it so that we can be motivated and encouraged! I am so happy for you!

I am in process of ordering a 16x40 portable building. I think I can do this myself with a couple of questions. Do I need to put in a vapor barrier first? How do I do that since the outside walls are already up? Thanks to anyone that can help me with this conversion on a step by step basis. I am 56 yr old woman and have never done anything quite like this before.... LOL :D

I love the name "shabin",... awesome, we are a few steps behind, checking out land stage.
What size electrical service are you going to install?

Lovehisgrace... If you are just beginning your cabin journey you may want to create your own topic. No big deal... but some of these threads get quite long and involved and we probably shouldn't hijack Invictus's original post. That said, there are several of us that have converted sheds to cabins, and even more (like me) that are in process. Before we can answer your question however, we need more information: -More detail on the "portable building". -Location? -Is this just a recreational cabin, or are you planning to live in it full-time? -How will it be cooled and/or heated? -Any other pertinant information?

I'm back...It's been almost 8 years and much has changed...I sold the old cabin and the land, and bought a way bigger acreage and built a new cabin from scratch...This is the view off the front porch.

Not meant to be a personal question. Just meant the region. Reason I ask was some of the framing in your first cabin would not have stood up to a region with a high snow load. No headers over windows in a load bearing exterior wall will adversely effect window operation. Like the front porch view and nothing like building your own camp. We call ours the Shamp=Shed/Camp. We built ours this summer in 2 weeks. 16x20 Cabin with 8x16 covered porch.

The first cabin was just a storage shed that we converted into a cabin...The new cabin was built just like a new home is built, but not on a permanent foundation for tax reasons....I'm in south eastern Oklahoma.

I'm wanting to build an outdoor kitchen and eating area with a covered roof on the side of the cabin...Anyone have any similar project pictures of an attached outdoor kitchen and eating area, or any kind of outdoor living area projects?
