Figured I would share some pictures of the cabin now that I am asking others for advice etc. Long-time goal to build/have a cabin the woods. This is in central PA. Much of the material is left over from a nature center construction project in Virginia - cypress siding and trim, stained T&G cypress for some interior work. Much of the board and batten is hemlock from the property, and cypress. Some of the wall studs are hemlock as well. Not much of a winter in PA this past one so we lucked out by starting in January and rolling right through. Most of the work done by an 85-year old friend of my father in law and his son. Master craftsmen with about 60 years combined experience.

Hattie, RMG,
Thanks! the exterior dimensions are 24 x 24 and with 6" walls the interior is approximately 23 x 23. With the loft the interior has about 820 square feet, + or -.

Thank you Owen. Just hoping we get a bit more done before winter gets here. Virtually no winter last year in central PA - but two of those in a row - not likely!

Beautiful cabin. Is it far from your home? It looks like a nice place to retire to in your golden years! I really like your choice of outer wood cover. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks old buddy. The cabin is about 4 hours away but we trek there often to see my father in law. Trout stream on property lots of good mountain biking and running spots too. My FIL's house is 8 miles away which is handy as we do not/cannot have running water due to permitting and creek. So retire close by yes and spend most of our time here.

I wanted to add some recent pictures as we prepare for winter. Got the composting loo in, will try to do the water system in a couple weeks and finish tiling the counter - and hopefully lower floors to go in real soon so I can seal them. Loft floors in -5/4 pine which makes a nice ceiling below too.

Great place and your wife's idea of side porch and door was a very good idea. Everything looks wonderful, take plenty of time to sit around the fire ring and enjoy.

Your cabin reminds me of ours in many ways-close in size, same black spindles on stairs and the shed dormer up in the loft-adds tons of space doesn't it? You are bookin along way faster than us though!!! Congratulations and enjoy!!!

Thanks for the comments. We wish we could have done more our selves, but there was no way to get it framed and roofed - so that we pushed along with a contractor (friends of my father in law). So not it progresses much slower on the weekends we are able to get up there.

Been a little while since I posted an update. Some good fall progress. Got the main floor installed (locally cut and milled quartersawn ash), got the tile work done on the counter but have not grouted, and sealed the loft and main floors. Then on Thanksgiving break moved some things in. Hoping wood stove goes in next week before our extended stay after Christmas - will have to break it in before really getting it warm!

I love your place! It's a similar size to ours. Where is the bedroom? It's on the main floor, right? Do you use the loft for sleeping too?

Yes, the bedroom is on main floor with loft "alcove" above. That section of the loft has walls on three sides and we could put in some privacy dividers to make a bit more, well, private from the rest of the loft. The loft will be for sleeping, though we are eventually going to get a futon so there will be another hang out area if need be.

Finally have the wood stove installed and have done the 3 break-in burns. Haven't had the first real - warm the cabin burn - some upcoming weekend I hope. Haven't fired up the SunMar yet either as our time out there has been short unfortunately. Couple of recent pics from just after Christmas, with two 6-inch snowfalls three days apart. Beautiful, but access gets a little dicey!

Thanks! The blue-gray is a stained cypress siding that was left over from a nature center project. Used this on the loft wall above living room, the cabinets, and ceiling in the loo. Will also use some to build a very small cabinet in the loo for the dental spit sink I got off Craigslist (my wife is a dental hygienist!) and may end up using some as shoe molding.

A couple more pics to come. Once learning the Jotul Castine finicky startup have been able to keep it going nicely. This past weekend was visited by a friend from Illinois who has a lake cabin in Wisconsin, and we got to work. Hung the kitchen shelves with wrought iron straps I had made by a local iron shop. Work very well and very strong to eventually hang the microwave. Some other minor work done but mostly, for a real change of pace, relaxed!

Thanks Spencie. It has been a ton of fun thus far. Waiting for the central PA winter to break to grout the counter top, connect the water pump and finally get the composting toilet working, among many other things!
