Hello All

Wonderful site, very nice to see other "cabins" that have been built and created with different ideas and materials. I came across this web site while researching outdoor shower ideas. I was pleasantly surprised with the web site and forum. So much so that I thought I would share our little "cabin" in the woods that we call "Rocky Point Camp".

These days it would seem that many people believe that bigger means better, as many of us here realize bigger is not nescessary better! I knew from many years as a boy growing up at a family cabin that some day I would have my own.

Most people think I am crazy saying "why would you want to go way up there and go to all that trouble". They don't get it, at all.

What I enjoy about building a cabin is there are no rules....no real design, well there was...I sketched it out.. did not have the plans around for long... I build when I feel like it and how I feel like. The cabin is not finished, I do not think it will ever be really finished...and thats OK.

The cabin experience began for me 15 years ago when I found a property on a lake I liked. It was remote, off the grid, but beautiful, a diamond in the rough. I scraped together money for the land...that first year I cleared a building site by hand. The second year I began building on a budget.... I hauled everything to my site in a 3/4 ton pick up. Some materials were cut on site from white pine logs. I used natural and "free" materials when and where I could. I visited many discount building supply yards. I think I put the whole cabin up for about $7500.00 including some furniture and equipment. I have never worked so hard in my life. I had the cabin closed in by winter and within a few years I had a comfy wilderness cabin to enjoy with my wife and 2 small children. I started this cabin in the woods 15 years ago it has become a big part of our families life and has generated countless family memories of life at the camp.

I would do it all over in a heart beat.

Winter now and I have a renewed energy from what I have read and discovered on this forum. Keep up the good work folks. I have a few projects up my sleeve for the summer.

From one cabin lover to another keep on building!

P.S. our Cabin called Rocky Point Camp is located in Quebec Canada north of Fort Coulonge

20' x 24' cabin plus the 12' x 16' screen porch front and 8' X 36' covered porch on the side.

Boy, if I had a dollar for every time somebody gave me that "look" and asked that question well...I would be rich!

Some people just don't get it do they?

Your place is wonderful. Nice and cozy!

Wow!! Awesome cabin! I must ask though about the interior wall siding... what is it? 1x6 knotty pine? Tongue and groove? Where did you get it? I live right on the Canadian border on the shores of the St. Lawrence river... a trip to Canada for building supplies is easy as there is no tax on building materials.... thanks..

Hey Swamphunter,

The interior pine is 1 x 8 T&G I bought as seconds from a local sawmill. I got a good deal, it has more knots and "character" than the good and select grades but I actually like it better than the "clear" pine.

The floor of my loft is 2 x 4 T&G, really thickstuff a full 2 1/4" it was apparently made for barn flooring or so I was told. I enjoy scouting for unique wood.

Did you run the wood for your wall and flooring through a planer? It looks incredibly smooth for sawmill cuts. I can't imagine rough cut sawmill lumber looking that smooth. Then again not all sawmills are created equally. I like the flooring. The 2x4 flooring should be stable enough never to creak when you walk across it.

Hey sorry for the misunderstanding but the T&G 1 x 8 came from the mill planed and dressed, it was seconds though, lots of knots and colored grain.

Oh for sure the floor T&G pine is really thick a full 2 1/4" no spring or squeaks...I layed it with 3 1/2 inch spiral ardox framing nails through the tongue!

Thanks for all the nice compliments !

Thank you Jon

I have more pics, I will post some more for you of the interior. Having built this cabin there are a few things I would change regarding the layout. All pretty minor. The placement of the doors can really make or break the lay out. Funny thing is my buddy saw mine and built the same cabin with some tweaks he made his 4 feet longer and located the doors differently. The extra 4 allowed him to put in a more traditional staircase which freed up some living room space nicely. I will try and post floor plans of both cabins.

Thanks again for the compliments.

Few more...

Forgot to mention, I am approx 50 KM away from the closest telephone or hydro. No celular service either.

Hand tools and generator only. I would like to install a solar system one of these years. I have been relying on kerosene lamps propane stove and fridge.

I plan on ordering an Ecotemp water heater for an outdoor shower this year.

Looks great Weaver.

Your cabin is very close to mine. I'm on the black river near the Hotel. Where abouts are you?

It's really nice up there right now, I've been going up every weekend almost this winter.

Hey Marker,

Thanks, Yes we are pretty close together, I am not far from you up the Jim Lake / Bois Francs Road. I have travelled by ATV over the mountain to the Black River Hotel, Nice area.

I will definitely have a look at your pics.
