Got a lot done on my toilet over the weekend. I took the design from a friend of mine who has one in his trailer. It doesn't smell whatsoever. He is there about 4 days a week and empties it once a year. Basically, you build a tight wooden box with a door. Inside sits a durable plastic bin. It goes underneath the floor. Mine was a royal PITA because it would not fit between the log joists so I had to take it apart and reassemble underneath. Then I took a plastic drainage tile and used that as the chute. I installed a funnel for the urine diverter which will drain out to a small leach bed before going down a steep hill to a creek. To vent it, I'm using 2 inch PVC with an inline computer fan. It's not hooked up in the pictures yet. Hope this inspires someone. DSCF2018.jpg

I REALLY Like the fact you used an old Barrel as the housing for the plastic pipe. I've been pondering my Compost Toilet and wondering how I could get an interesting design and Voila Smawgunner has an a perfect answer ! Luv It !
That black culvert pipe you have there... That has ridged insides from what I can see, is that correct ? No concerns over anything sticking in the ridges ? That would cause some odours, no doubt.
The Urine diverter is a must IMO and well done ! But as One guy to another... I'm also installing a Urinal of some sort, while having to maintain a "diverter" for ladies when present.
Last Question, Did you setup some kind of Trap Door or Hatch to get at the compost material to do the clean out ? If So, how'd you do that in a way to keep critters out and odours contained ?

Thanks for the comments Steve. I "found" the pipe up the road that allowed water to go under the road and into a creek. It was sticking out about 8 feet! I figured they must come in 10-12 foot sections and they were too lazy to cut it off,...so I helped the township out ;) It's actually smooth inside. VERY smooth but you're right..the picture makes it look like ridges. I'm glad it had the ridged outside because I used a wood "collar" to really snug it up tight. The wood box has a door on the end where you remove the bin. It has hinges and two gate clasps. I'll try to get pictures on Weds. And to access the box, it's very close to the foundation door.

Sawgunner, the pipe comes in 20 foot sections and may have been left long because the road crews didnt have a saw on hand, were lazy, or it was a design feature. It doesnt affect me either way but here we leave the culvert long usually by design as it reduces erosion directly adjacent to the road structure.

Excellent, looking forward to the detailed pics. I hope you used only Stainless Screws, nuts etc as pretty much everything else will corrode over a short time. I'll only be using a 5 Gallon Pail & Sawdust for the compostable and now I'm thinking about how to use a barrel as the base and setting up an access door to remove the bucket. A slightly different take on the Lovable Loo or whatever it's called.

The nice thing about it is there are only 2 metal parts that are subject to waste and those are the two aluminum rivets holding the funnel on.

Here are a couple more pics I took today after finishing it up. Painted the staves on the barrel, ran the urinal plumbing and connected the vent stack (with in line fan). My wife peed in it and let's just say I'll give the funnel idea a C-. It needs to be wider. IMG_1207.JPG

Thx for this. I'm putting urine diversion into my bedroom composting bucket. I hadn't considered the, um er, spray width of the "visitor."
I was thinking too, to perhaps go to a two holer. One for each process and if accidents happen. Well. Toodley biscuit.
A friend and I have been working on a clivus muldrum design similar to your set up. The liquid is diverted and accessible as fertilizer. And the drier stuff composts in situ and is then removed on a yearly/as needed basis.
Have you had to empty your barrel yet? And how'd that go.

Lol not yet. I plan to wait till winter though...thought that would be uh.. a bit more tolerable. I will probably have to shake the bin to get the "mountain" to come down a bit.

You could get a urinal from a porta potty. I use one in my barn, with a simply water spigot to "flush" Drains out to my A-holes neighbors fruit trees...
